When Your Mouth is Bored…

I’ve been eating “clean” for about two weeks, which for me, can mean a variety of different things. Right now, it means significantly reducing the amount of sugar and carbs that I typically mainline on a daily basis.

This week, I reached my limit. Don’t get me wrong, eating clean is great, but when I have to prepare everything myself and then it doesn’t look or taste like something out of the pages of Bon Appetit or Gourmet magazine, I rapidly lose interest.

I desired a taste explosion. I wanted something that was delicious and filling, but still relatively healthy so a cheeseburger deluxe was out of the question…

My first thought was falafel.

For my cheat meal, I decided to go to one of my favorite falafel spots, Maoz. For the uninitiated, a falafel is a Middle Eastern food made of deep fried ground chickpeas. They’re usually served as part of a platter or in a pita. Maoz does falafel right. It’s reasonably priced, always fresh, and always delicious.

My taste buds were in desperate need of something to make them feel alive again, so I ordered the jalapeno falafel, with premium toppings of avocado and hummus. At the free toppings bar I went for the cucumber & tomato salad, roasted carrots, and tabouleh. For extra heat, I loaded up on the spicy cilantro sauce.

It was heaven in my mouth, for a number of reasons. The whole wheat pita was soft, but strong enough to stand up to the ingredients contained within, the hummus in particular can make things messy.  The cool creaminess of the avocado and hummus were the perfect counterpoint to the peppery falafel.  The carrots added a subtle sweetness, the cucumber and tomato salad contributed to the overall fresh factor and I liberally dolloped on the spicy cilantro sauce to intensify the heat.

When it was all said and done, my appetite was sated and I felt great. Better yet, I didn’t experience the the mixed feelings of happiness and regret which I like to call the food binge afterglow.

Whether you are trying to be more health conscious or just want a satisfying meal, the Maoz falafel is a delicious choice.
