And you can’t have them at a poorly lit desk. It’s 2014, year of basking in a gloriously lit abode (and also of the horse). Let’s light your good side a little better with a lighting upgrade.
Think of desk lights as tools. They’re indispensable if you spend any length of time sitting down, and you do… We’ve covered my personal task lamp before but here are some other options.

Piani Table Lamp by Flos | Legendary masters of illumination FLOS produces a light designed by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec. The clean lines and asymmetrical design distill this object to it’s most basic functions. A beautiful LED lamp made of injection printed ABS plastic and aluminum that also holds your keys, wallet, business cards, etc. In a variety of colors but green is my favorite.
Tab Table Lamp | This beauty features a directional porcelain reflector on top of a die-cast aluminum body. Designed by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby in 2007 for FLOS.
Lim C Table Lamp | A minimalists dream, the Lim C offers a task lamp that is stunning in it’s simplicity. Designed by San Francisco-based Pablo Pardo, the Lim C actually does not take up any desk space. It attaches via a mountable magnet that offers 125° rotation. Guaranteed conversation starter.
Z-Bar LED Desk Lamp |Ultra-modern task lamp designed by Peter Ng in 2010, the Z-Bar is full of features. On/Off touch strip, 42 LEDs, and multi-level dimming.
Anglepoise Type 75 Desk Lamp | Designed by Kenneth Grange the Type 75 is a more traditional but no less beautiful desk lamp.
Kelvin LED Table Lamp | A gorgeous and functional task light designed by Architect and designer Antonio Citterio in 2010. The Kelvin features on/off touch sensitivity as well as warm bright light from it’s 30 LEDs.
Trapeze LED Table Lamp | A favorite of mine, obviously, this is my personal task light. Designed by Peter Stathis in 2011 this light is the best of both form and function. It’s playful design balances itself at any angle and it’s head is able to be positioned in any direction. With touch on/off technology and warm bright light in two different modes the Trapeze is the most sculptural and effective task light on the market.
Bauhaus Table Lamp | Born from the Bauhaus movement and designed in 1924, this lavish glass lamp is an actual work of art. It resides in the MoMA’s permanent collection.
Scorpion Single Head | Calling this one a splurge may be a bit of an understatement but it’s just too incredible to leave off the list. A sinister and elegant design, the Scorpion Single Head by Ochre (there’s a Double if you’re interested) is a retro styled lamp with an angleable body and head. This is less a desk lamp than a statement of authority, buy two just to balance the room. An absolute grail.
